Carbon Fiber Sheet Procurement Essentials: Interpreting Material Certifications, Mechanical Parameters, and Test Reports

Purchasing carbon fiber sheets based solely on price or appearance is a recipe for disappointment. True confidence comes from data-driven validation—specifically, the ability to read and interpret technical documentation that accompanies professional-grade composites.
Key documents to demand:
Material Data Sheet (MDS): Lists fiber type, resin system, cure temperature, glass transition temperature (Tg), and nominal properties.
Mechanical Test Report: Should include tensile strength (ASTM D3039), flexural modulus (ASTM D7264), and interlaminar shear strength (ASTM D2344).
Certifications: ISO 9001 for quality management, AS9100 for aerospace, or RoHS/REACH for environmental compliance.
Pay close attention to fiber volume fraction (ideally 55–65%); lower values indicate excess resin and weaker performance. Also verify void content—high-quality autoclave-cured sheets typically have <2% porosity.
A reputable supplier doesn’t just sell material—they provide transparency. If test data is vague or unavailable, consider it a warning sign. In composites, trust must be earned through evidence.
